Dilatant behaviour

Dilatant behaviour

Dilatancy (lat. dilatus - retarding) is the flowing behaviour of substances whose viscosity grows with increasing shear stress. The increase in viscosity occurs due to a structural change in the compound, which results in the particles interacting more closely with each other (e.g. entangling themselves) and so making it harder for them to glide past each other.
