New subfloor – new challenges
But today they want to press on with their own labour of love. The roof of the extension has already been completely removed and replaced by a new one made of oak beams. Apart from the floor in the ground-floor entrance area, all the subfloors are new: on the ground floor, a subfloor has already been laid on a wooden beam structure and a layer of STAUF XP 10 levelling compound, strengthened with STAUF reinforcing fibres, serves as the subsurface for bonding the LVT flooring. When selecting the adhesive, the Borgelts opted for STAUF D 50. This fibre-reinforced wet-bed adhesive reduces the gap widths and ensures high dimensional stability even during laying. On the first floor and in the attic, a cement screed with underfloor heating was installed.
STAUF MULTILAYER boasts elasticity
Today, the first floor is the focus of attention. The subfloor has already been prepared: Mathias Borgelt has sealed the cracks using the fast-curing two-component silicate casting resin STAUF SGH 50, primed certain areas with STAUF VDP 160 and filled transitions with the stable, cementitious filler STAUF RM. Now he spreads the elastic single-component hybrid adhesive STAUF MULTILAYER on the screed using the STAUF No.4 notched trowel and lays the extra-wide multilayer oak planks, one after the other, exactly according to the installation plan. This is important because the “Chalet” country house planks made by BOEN, with an oiled surface, come in various widths, of up to 395 mm. Mathias Borgelt chose STAUF MULTILAYER because it is easy to work with and he appreciates the elasticity of the adhesive. Multi-layer parquet flooring from BOEN, namely 209-mm-wide “Vivo” oak planks, is also to be bonded to the subfloors in the attic. Here, too, the Borgelt team will use STAUF MULTILAYER.
DIY modern country house style
Mathias Borgelt will lay a total of around 200 square metres of flooring in seven rooms. The results can best be admired a few weeks later from the gallery in the attic: The new floor fits perfectly with the rustic-modern style of exposed oak beams, brick masonry and whitewashed walls, which offer a wonderful setting for a kitchen with a subtle country look and some individual antique items.
